This year springtime in the Boothbay region is punctuated by uncharacteristically decent and ever improving weather, COVID-19 vaccines in full bloom, beaten and battered businesses coming off life support and seasonal water customers itching to come back to the beautiful coast of Maine. There seems to be the sweet smell of optimism in the air!!!
With the recent mild weather, district staff has had the opportunity to get an early jump on conditioning the seasonal water system for another season with staff busy making repairs and needed improvements throughout the 75-mile labyrinth of seasonal water main. Even though the daytime temperatures are improving, overnight temperatures are still not consistently acceptable to open the valves; but that day may be close at hand. Our Natural Resources Program Manager has a great relationship with Mother Nature and has put in a good word and asked her to give us a break!!
Our goal is to begin the flushing, disinfecting and the sampling process of the seasonal water system late this week or very early next. After that massive project is complete, we hope to be off to the races establishing our 2,000 seasonal services shortly thereafter. Please check in early and often for further updates as we progress. Stay Tuned!!
12 April 2021
This is the morning many of our customers and local business owners have been waiting for, we begin the seasonal water system start-up process today. Around the region you will notice water draining everywhere from our seasonal distribution system, this is the first step in getting the seasonal water system up and running. Tomorrow morning, and every morning thereafter until we are completely up and running, we will post our seasonal start-up matrix so that each customer can track our progress. When all the boxes are checked next to a particular road, that will mean all residences and business’ on that road that are eligible for a meter will be installed and ready for service. Please keep your fingers crossed in that we find no unforeseen damage that will slow us down.

Yesterday steady progress was made in filling the seasonal distribution system with water possessing a high level of disinfectant. As of this morning approximately 70% of the system was flooded with minor, unforeseen winter damage located and currently being addressed by district staff. We are working diligently to complete the necessary steps required for establishing seasonal start-up and hope the flooding & disinfection process is completed by Wednesday. It is all positive forward motion!!!!
14 April 2021
We made good progress yesterday filling and disinfecting the seasonal water distribution grid. We have a little further to go in East Boothbay but are on track. Treatment staff will begin taking samples throughout the system today and have them shipped to the laboratory to be analyzed for the absence of pathogens. We are getting there, stay tuned for our next report tomorrow.
15 April 2021
The entire seasonal water system, with the exception of Boothbay Shores in East Boothbay, have been flooded, disinfected, flushed and sampled for pathogens. The samples have been delivered to our lab and we are now awaiting results. If the samples prove that the water is safe for us to serve to our customers, staff will begin, seasonal system wide, establishing the seasonal services. Check in tomorrow morning for an update as to what services, if any, have been established.
16 April 2021
As of yesterday the entire seasonal water distribution system was flooded, disinfected, flushed and tested free of pathogens. With the system ready for seasonal service establishment customers may wonder why the General Manager has ordered a 3-day delay in establishing services; in short, mother nature is not cooperating. Tonight, the Boothbay region will be receiving, hopefully the last, winter weather Nor’easter with snow and sustained temperatures predicted well below freezing which would cause much damage to the meters if installed. Therefore a delay in setting services will be observed until Monday, 19 April 2021 at 0700hr. After that time, the mission of the district will be to establish services as quickly and efficiently as possible. The district remains well on-track to have service established to its nearly 2,000 seasonal customers well before the 1 May deadline as defined by Maine law. The next update to the matrix will be Tuesday, 20 April 2021 where it is the hope, our customers will see much progress in service establishment. Have a great weekend and stay warm and safe!
