The Boothbay Region Water
District has a very progressive backflow prevention, or cross-connection
control program. A cross-connection is
a connection between a drinking water pipe and a polluted source. Here is a common example. You are going to spray weed killer on your
lawn. You hook up your hose to the
sprayer that contains the weed killer.
If the water pressure drops at the same time you turn on the hose, the
chemical in the sprayer may be sucked back into the hose, the chemical in the
sprayer may be may be sucked back into the drinking water pipes through the
hose. This would seriously pollute the drinking water system. This problem can be prevented by the addition
of a backflow prevention device for your residence or business. This way our consumers help protect their
water system. Removing cross-connections is vital, however if drinking water is
to be protected.
The State of Maine has
dictated that each public water supplier create a program to ensure backflow
prevention. At the Boothbay Region
Water District has worked diligently to ensure cross-connection control for
each residential service by requiring a residential duel check valve on each
residence and requiring higher protections for all commercial and industrial
users of the system. If you have any
questions concerning this program feel free to contact Mr. Scott Campbell, the
District’s Cross-Connection Control Inspector, at (207) 633-4723 during normal
business hours.
